About Texas Hold'em Poker

Texas Hold 'Em is one of the most famous and popular forms of poker played throughout the world. With up to ten people playing at once, Texas Hold 'Em Poker is an exciting variation of poker.

Players are dealt two cards each (called the hole cards), and five community cards are dealt by the dealer, with a round of betting preceding each new community card. Players need to make the best five card hand out of the five community cards and two hole cards. Note that you do not have to use the two hole cards in your hand. You can use both, only one or none of them.

Texas Hold 'Em enjoyed a huge surge in popularity in the late 1970s and the early 1980s as a result of being used as the world championship form of poker. Such a huge leap in status was also accompanied by liberalisation of US gambling laws and these factors combined to lift Texas Hold 'Em to the lofty status it enjoys today.

Texas Hold 'Em has a significant advantage in that it plays equally well with any form of betting from limit to no limit. You will enjoy the enthralling game play and the frequent strong hands that occur in Texas Holdem. Many of the top players consider Hold'em to be the most challenging and sublime of all the poker games.

Texas Hold'em Poker overview in more detail

Texas Hold'em is a game for those who are quick at the draw. The game can have anywhere from two to ten players and consists of four rounds of betting. Each player is dealt two cards, which they use in conjunction with the five communal cards; players then take any five cards to make up their best hand. The objective is simple - finish with the best hand and win the pot!

  1. The player to the immediate left of the dealer posts the small blind bet. The next player on the left places the big blind bet. Please note that the dealer moves to a new position after each game.
  2. Each player receives two pocket cards.
  3. In the first round, the player to the left of the big blind poster plays first. This player is given the following options:
    Fold
    Bet
    Raise
In the first round, players are limited to one bet and three raises each. Players are not permitted to check, as blinds are bets and not antes.
  4. In the second round, three community cards are dealt. This is known as the flop. In the ensuing betting round, players can:
    Check
    Fold
    Call
    Raise
  5. In the third round, a fourth community card is dealt. This is known as the turn. A round of betting follows the turn.
  6. In the fourth round, the final community card is dealt, bringing the total to five. This card is known as the River Card. This is followed by the final round of betting. The remaining players use their two pocket cards (the cards that are facedown on the table) and the five community cards to create the best possible five-card hand. The winner gets the pot. If two or more players have the same hand, they will split the pot equally.
